As part of my effort to include a wider range of opinions on Indebooks, I’m rounding up other reviews of books I’ve read recently. If you have a thoughtful review you’d like to submit, please email me at indebookreview@gmail.com, or post your review in the comment section below!
Providence, a paranormal romance novel by Jamie McGuire, was a book I just couldn’t get into. The main character annoyed me, the plot was slow-moving, and the romance felt over-the-top and a bit creepy. Other reviewers, however, loved the book. Maybe my soon-to-be-patented ‘unhealthy relationship detector’ is overly sensitive. Here’s a roundup of what some other reviewers had to say about the book:
Scandalicious Book Reviews says:
“This story is a roller coaster ride of mystery, intrigue and suspense. The battles are epic and the love story is delicious. I am going to warn you up front, Jared says some things that are so swoon-worthy, he even melted my old scandalicious heart!”
Tina from Tina’s Book Reviews also loved the romance, though pokes fun at some of the YA-ish drama:
“Jamie McGuire’s writing is like a warm cup of coffee, tasty to perfection. Each layer of Providence just got better and better as the plot grew thicker and the characters took more shape…Providence offered a refreshing twist of the overused love triangle, insta-love {due to the life long connection} and intense action for an outcome of a well worked audience pleaser, supplying what the romantic wants, swoons, gasps and a reason to shed a little tear. Despite its -insert annoying break up phase arc for ya drama- the story itself was very well rounded and highly entertaining.”
Jetches at My Not So Vacant Shelf somewhat agreed with me on the intense romance, but otherwise loved the book:
“This book, like Beautiful Disaster, made me cry, laugh, smile uncontrollably, and some times shakes my head thinking “what the hell are they doing?”…So far I’ve found that the main men in Jamies’ books happen to be very very much in love with the main women in her book. It’s a little scary sometimes and borders on the obsessed level but it always seems to fit… What I like is how Jamie can get the humour across in her writing and the emotions of the characters.”
Chris from IndieBookSpot didn’t connect to the major characters, but thought the book was well-written.
“…I found Nina to be quite hard to like, yet I felt that was the author’s intention. It was kind of difficult to see what she saw in Jared, who didn’t really have any qualities to distinguish him from the brooding males who populate most fantasy novels. At the same time, however, the mystery of Nina’s father kept the book plugging along and ensured that it remained interesting until the climax. There’s no doubt that Providence is a very well-written book, and it’s head and shoulders above many similar books in its genre.”
